Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, is a family of technologies that provide digital data transmission over the wires used in the "last mile" of a local telephone network. Typically, the download speed of DSL ranges from 128 kilobits per second (Kb/s) to 6000 Kb/s depending on DSL technology and service level implemented. On average, cable is faster than DSL in most commercial situations. Modern cable systems can provide 30 Mbit/s downstream, but this bandwidth is shared between all the users on the cable segment (which could be from 100 to 200 households).
